What is the Basel Convention and why is it important for waste management?

The Basel Convention is an international treaty that controls the transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal, established to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of hazardous waste generation and management. Compliance with the Basel Convention is critical for organizations involved in waste handling to ensure legal operations and prevent environmental contamination across international borders.

Which types of waste are classified as hazardous under Basel Convention regulations?

Hazardous wastes under the Basel Convention include materials such as lead-acid batteries, asbestos-containing waste, persistent organic pollutants, and certain metal-bearing waste streams that pose significant risks to human health and the environment. Classification depends on the waste's origin, composition, and characteristics, requiring proper identification and documentation for compliant transboundary movement.

What documentation and permits are required for Basel Convention compliance?

Organizations must obtain prior informed consent from both exporting and importing countries, maintain detailed waste manifests, and secure appropriate permits before moving hazardous waste across borders. All documentation must accurately describe the waste classification, destination facility, and handling procedures to ensure full regulatory compliance and traceability throughout the waste management chain.
